Work back from the goal

A target amount and a date, turned into a monthly figure. Which is the only form of the question anyone can actually act on.

An assumption you can change, not a forecast. Equity funds have historically averaged near this over long periods, with very large swings along the way.

Monthly SIP needed

Start this SIP

Indicative only, based on the assumptions below. Not an offer or a guarantee.

What this assumes

  • Contributions at the start of each month, which is how a SIP mandate actually debits.
  • A constant annual return, compounded monthly. Real markets do not deliver a constant return — this is an average, applied evenly.
  • No allowance for exit load or capital gains tax at redemption.

The boring bit

Where the growth comes from

Over long periods most of the final amount is growth rather than contribution — and the share rises sharply with time. Over 10 years, contributions dominate. Over 25, growth does, by a wide margin.

Which is the entire argument for starting small and early rather than large and late. The years are doing more work than the rupees.

Monthly = target ÷ [ ((1+i)^n − 1) ÷ i × (1+i) ] , where i = annual rate ÷ 12 and n = months

FAQ

Questions about this calculator

What return should I assume?

Nobody knows, and anyone who tells you otherwise is selling something. Equity funds have historically averaged around 11–13% over long periods with very large swings inside them; debt funds much less. Lowering the assumption raises the monthly figure, which is the safer direction to be wrong in.

What if I cannot afford the monthly amount?

Start with what you can and use a step-up SIP that rises each year with your income. A smaller SIP you keep for fifteen years beats a larger one you cancel in year two.

Is the target in today’s money or future money?

Whatever you typed. If you entered today’s cost of something you will buy in fifteen years, it will cost more by then — use the child education or retirement calculator, which handle inflation explicitly.

Turn the number into a plan
