Cover that matches the actual bill

Sized for the hospital, not the brochure

Most families hold ₹3–5 lakh of cover, usually from an employer. A single serious admission in a metro private hospital regularly exceeds that, and the shortfall is paid in cash at the worst possible moment.

By life stage

Four different problems

A 32-year-old and a 62-year-old need very different things from the same word, so we band these by where you are rather than by product name.

Children and young families

A floater covering both parents and children is usually the cheapest sensible structure at this stage.

  • Maternity cover has a waiting period — buy it years before you need it
  • Add children at birth rather than later

Working adults

Individual or floater, and importantly your own policy rather than only the employer’s.

  • Employer cover ends the day the job does
  • Continuity of your own policy is what earns waiting periods down

Mid-age

The stage where pre-existing conditions start to appear and where buying gets harder each year you wait.

  • Declare conditions — an undisclosed one is the top cause of refusal
  • Waiting periods of two to four years typically apply

Senior citizens

Harder, more expensive, and still worth doing. Some insurers still accept new entrants past 65.

  • Separate policies often beat a floater once the eldest is past ~55
  • Sub-limits on room rent matter more here than the headline sum insured

The cheap way to a big number

Top-up plans

A top-up starts paying above a threshold you set. A ₹5 lakh base with a ₹20 lakh top-up costs far less than ₹25 lakh of base cover and gets you to a similar place for a large claim, which is the claim that would actually ruin you.

It is frequently the sensible route to an adequate sum insured, and it is rarely the one being pushed, because the commission on it is smaller.

  • Use the health cover calculator to size the total
  • Check the top-up is "super top-up" — it aggregates claims across the year rather than requiring one large one

FAQ

Questions people actually ask

Is my employer’s cover enough?

Almost never on its own, and it ends with the job — typically at the exact life stage when fresh cover is hardest to get. Treat it as a supplement to your own policy.

What is a waiting period?

The time before a specific condition is covered. Pre-existing conditions commonly wait two to four years; some specified illnesses one to two. It runs from when the policy starts, which is the argument for starting early.

Floater or individual policies?

A floater is cheaper and works well for a young family. Once the oldest member is past roughly 55, separate policies often work out better, because a floater is priced on the oldest person on it.

What is cashless, and does it always work?

The insurer settles directly with the hospital, so you do not pay and reclaim. It requires the hospital to be in that insurer’s network, which is worth checking against the hospitals you would actually use before you buy.
