Insurance calculator
What sum insured do you need?
Health cover is usually bought at the number that sounds reassuring rather than the number a hospital bill actually reaches. This works from the second one.
A cardiac procedure or cancer treatment in a metro private hospital commonly runs ₹6–15 lakh. Smaller cities are lower.
Medical inflation runs well ahead of general inflation. Cover bought today has to still work in ten years.

What this assumes
- Medical inflation assumed at 10% a year — consistently higher than general inflation in India, though it varies by city and procedure.
- A family floater is loaded for household size rather than multiplied by it, since two large claims in one year are uncommon.
- Age loading applies from 50, and again from 60, where the likelihood of a large claim rises sharply.
- This sizes the cover. It says nothing about premium, which depends on insurer, city, medical history and plan features.
The boring bit
Why the number is larger than people expect
Most families hold ₹3–5 lakh of cover, often from an employer. A single cardiac procedure or a course of cancer treatment in a metro private hospital regularly exceeds that, and the shortfall is paid in cash at the worst possible moment.
The other half of the problem is time. At 10% medical inflation a ₹8 lakh procedure costs roughly ₹20 lakh in ten years. Cover bought today has to still be adequate then, because the moment you develop a condition, increasing it gets harder and more expensive.
Sum insured = base cost × household loading × age loading × (1 + medical inflation)^years
FAQ
Questions about this calculator
Is my employer’s health cover enough?
Usually not, and it ends with the job — typically at the exact life stage when buying fresh cover is hardest. Treat it as a supplement to your own policy rather than a replacement for one.
Individual policies or a family floater?
A floater is cheaper and works well for a young family. Once the oldest member is past about 55, separate policies often work out better, because a floater is priced on the oldest person on it.
What is a top-up plan?
Cover that starts paying above a threshold you set. A ₹5 lakh base with a ₹20 lakh top-up costs far less than ₹25 lakh of base cover and gets you to a similar place. It is frequently the sensible way to reach a large number.
Turn the number into a plan
A calculator gets you to a figure. Getting there needs a product, and that is the part we do.
