Investments · NFO
A fund opening for the first time
Occasionally an NFO opens a genuinely new category. More often it is an existing strategy in a new wrapper, sold hard because a launch is easier to market than a track record.
The misunderstanding that costs money
₹10 a unit is not a discount
Every NFO issues units at ₹10, and it is routinely presented as cheap next to an existing fund at ₹450. It is not. A ₹10 unit of a new fund and a ₹450 unit of an established one both buy you the same rupee of underlying assets — you simply get more units of the cheaper-looking one.
This is one of the most common misconceptions in Indian retail investing, and it sells a great deal of fund every year. If someone offers you an NFO on the basis that the units are cheap, that tells you something useful about the person offering it.
When it is worth it
A short list
An NFO is genuinely worth considering when it opens exposure you cannot already get — a new index, a sector or geography with no existing fund, or a structure that does not otherwise exist in the market.
When an equivalent fund already exists with three or five years of record, that record is worth more than novelty. You can see how the strategy behaved in a bad year, which is the single most useful thing you can know about a fund and precisely what an NFO cannot show you.
- New category or exposure with no existing equivalent — worth a look
- Same strategy as an existing fund — the existing one has a track record
- No performance history, by definition
- Check the expense ratio; new does not mean cheap
FAQ
Questions people actually ask
Are NFOs riskier than existing funds?
Not inherently — the risk depends on what the fund holds. What you lose is information: there is no record of how the strategy behaved through a downturn.
Why are NFOs pushed so hard?
They are easier to sell. A launch has a story and a deadline; a five-year-old fund has neither. Distribution incentives during an NFO window are often higher too — which we are telling you as a distributor, because you should weigh it.
Will you tell me not to buy one?
Frequently, yes. If an existing fund does the same thing with a record behind it, that is what we will say.
